Puerto Rico national goalkeeper, Christopher Echevarría and the young Karlos Ferrer Mojica among other players translate the success of the team.
The two biggest teams and the teams that send more players to National Team, Bayamón FC and Criollos Caguas aren't on the league. However, some known national faces are on the league. At Club Atlético Fajardo, Marcos Martínez, Eloy Matos,Joseph Acevedo and the captain Olvin Ortiz are the most famous faces on the team. At Bayamón FC B some youth national Players like former U-17 Alberto Santiago. SPDP Spartans have former U-17 John Robles, Adán Lopez and Senior National center back Luís Lorenzo.
Luís Lorenzo is a 23 years-old that has been a known face on the Puerto Rico U-20 and Senior National Team. This year, Luis went to Dominica Republic to play for Atlántico FC in LDF Banco Popular but he didn't get a work visa to play there then he returned to SPDP Spartans.
Lorenzo conceded us a interview on 19th of may 2016 and he tells Inside Caribbean Football about the football in Puerto Rico
Luis Lorenzo, Puerto Rico National Team |
Luis Lorenzo: I think the League will go help much the National Teams because we have the right place (PRSL) to show our talents week by week. To give chance to local players and value them will depend of the national teams' coaches.
Inside Caribbean Football: What result do you think the league is giving?
Luis Lorenzo: In the years the league has been played, it has given a great result because many players of different National Teams, senior and youth, have played in it (PRSL).
Inside Caribbean Football: What do you think about the quality of the players and teams on the league?
Luis Lorenzo: We have a good level. Day by day we see the improvement in many ways: technical and fisical but for sure can improve always because there's a good base.
Inside Caribbean Football: Puerto Rico FC have the name of the country and was created to improve the football in the island. but only two puertoricans, Joseph Marrero and Jorge Rivera, are on the team. Do you think the team isn't doing what is its purpose of your creation that would be the improvement of the football in the country?
Luis Lorenzo: I think so, the team is debuting only this year, is a new club and we have the representation of the best schools in Puerto Rico that are Don Bosco and Quintana. But in my opinion should have more or less 6 boricuas players. But step by step they should look by the island looking for talents. But by the way I wish them much success on their project and do that for good.
Inside Caribbean Football: TT PRO League of Trinidad & Tobago and ABFA Premier League of Antigua and Barbuda are two leagues very important for Caribbean because there are many players from other Caribbean countries and the dream to play pro is more real out there. Do you think Puerto Rico Soccer League have power to be a important league for Puerto Rico and also for Caribbean?
Luis Lorenzo: It is how you said in the question, we are talking about two important leagues with important investment and it is not in Puerto Rico right now. To PRSL be an important league we need important investments. Good money to the players to be enough to they only focus on football, to bring good foreigners, to have better fields and other things that there's no here but that it can be one of the best yes it can.
Luis Lorenzo showed us the objetives of Puerto Rico Soccer League that is to give chance to boricuas talents to show their ability to be able to dream with big things with the National Teams and with a better team abroad. The begin of this good things can be to join NASL's new side Puerto Rico FC. And that the boricuas that left the islands to play in better level like Andres Cabrero and Juan Coca playing in Finland for Kultsu FC, Hector ramos playing for CD Águila in El Salvador and Jackie Marrero and Jorge Rivera playing for Puerto Rico FC can be a example that the players can't stop of dream.
