Inside BVI's football by a Grenadian

The football in British Virgin Islands isn't much popular. In 2010, the population in the country was 20. 054 and this low number interfere in football as well. The There's only a few of footballers in British Virgin Islands so there is a lot of caribbean from Haiti, Grenada, St. Vincent and Grenadines, St. Lucia, Dominica, Guyana and Jamaica in the local teams that play the National League and some cups. On the National Team there are many foreigners from England and United States of America and sometimes any local player is named to represent the country.

In Caribbean Cup Qualifiers British Virgin Islands remeet Dominica in an official competition
after the two games in World Cup Qualifiers and Martinica. Domica won 7-0 and Martinica 3-0.

Among the foreigners on the local league is former Grenada National Team Derrol Redhead, 29, that play in the island since 2009 and since that he only played for Sugar Boyz. For his side he won Wendel Williams knock out cup twice. For his country he played the U-20 in 2006. Inside Caribbean Football: How do you see the football in British Virgin Islands?

Derrol Redhead: I seen the football in the BVI not as competitive as other Caribbean Islands... as there not much to be achieve from the League

Inside Caribbean Football: What we have seen on BVI National Team is that many English-based and some American-based have been brought to play for the country and the local players have been forgotten. What's your opinion about it?

Derrol Redhead: The English based players are brought to strenghten the team because many of the other clubs players are Caribbean guys and said that they are not bvislander so cannot play for BVI.

Inside Caribbean Football: Following month will run in the region CONCACAF U-20 Qualifiers. British Virgin Islands won't be represented on it. How do you think it influence the football in the country?

Derrol Redhead: Most of BVI youth shows very little towards the sport as it is played by most outside guys hence the reason why country shows little interest...resulting a downwards move towards the standard the country.

Inside Caribbean Football: What do you think about the Leagues or clubs in the island?

Derrol Redhead: Most clubs are well organized as they mixed different Caribbean guys and management who are well educated about the game and whenever such play each other we have quality entertained games.

Inside Caribbean Football: What do you think BVIFA should do to improve the football in the country?

Derrol Redhead: The BVIFA can improve the football in the BVI by helping the clubs in any ways that can bring development towards the team and to show a lot more interest in ways that can improve the standard ah football here. They can also look into Caribbean players that are living here more than 5 years given opportunity to play for the BVI.

Derrol Redhead told us that in BVI aren't much players and that there are a lot of caribbean guys and that this caribbean guys could play for the National Team because many of them play in BVI since much time. He miss investiments to support the teams and the National Team as well. Thank you for the interview, Derrol Redhead!
